Fantastic Place for Surf – Bali

The swells come from the Indian Ocean, so the surf is on the south side of the island, and strangely, on the north west coast of Nusa Lembongan, where the swell funnels in to the strait between there and the Bali coast. In the dry season ( around April to September ), the west coast has the best breaks, with the trade winds coming in from the south east, this is also when Nusa Lembongan work best. In the wet season ( October to March ), surf the eastern side of the island, from Nusa Dua to Padangbai. if there’s a north wind or no wind at all there are also a couple of breaks on the southern coast of Bukit Peninsula.

Below the list of The most well known breaks.

Kuta & Legian
For your first plunge into the warm Indian Ocean, try the beach at Kuta Beach; on full tide go out near lifesaving club at the south end of the beach road. at low tide, try the tubes around Halfway Kuta, probably the best place on Bali for beginners to practice. start at the beach breaks if you are a bit rusty. the sand here is fine and packed hard, so it can hurt when you hit it. Further north, the breaks at Legian Beach can be pretty wonderful, with lefts and rights on the sand bar. at Kuta & Legian you will encounter most of the local Balinese Surfer. Further north again there more beach breaks off Seminyak, such us the Oberoi near the hotel of the same name. the sea here is fickle and can have dangerous rip tides – take a friend and take a good care. For more serious stuff, go to the reefs south of the beach breaks about 1 km out to sea. Kuta Reefs, a vast stretch of coral, provide a variety of waves. the main breaks is a classic left hander. best at mid to high tide with a 5 to 6 foot swell, when it peels across the reef and has a beautiful inside tube section; the first part is a good workable wave. over 7 feet it tends to double up and section. south of kuta reef there are some good breaks around the end of the air port runaway. there are reef break called Airport Lefts, with a workable wave at mid to high tied. on the south side of run away, Airport Rights has three right handers that can be a bit fickle, and are shallow and dangerous at low tide they are best for good surfers at mid to high tide with a strong swell.

Padang Padang
Just Padang for short, this super shallow, left hand reef breaks is just north of Ulu towards Kuta the new road around the coast make it easy to get to. check this places carefully before venturing out. it’s very demanding break that only work over about 6 feet from mid to high tide, its a great place to watch from the cliff top. if you can’t surf tubes, backhand of forehand, don’t go out. Padang is a tube. after a ledgey take of, you power along the bottom before pulling up into the barrel.

Bingin
Bingin is located in the north of Padang Padang beach and accessible by road, this once secret spot can now get crowded. it’s best at mid tide with a 6 foot swell, when it manufactures short but perfect left-hand barrels.

Dreamland
You have to go through the abortive Pecatu Indah Resort to reach this spot, which also get crowded now that the road is better. at low tide with a 5 foot swell, this solid peak offer a short, sharp right and a lower, more tubuar left.

Balangan
Go throughPecatu Indah Resort and follow the alternative roud around to the right to reach Balangan. Balangan is a fast left over a shallow reef, unsurfable at low tide, good at mid tide with anything over a 4 foot swell; with an 8 foot swell , this can be a clssic wave.

There are also more exotic place to surf in Bali. Now most of the main surf breaks are shown on the Bali Map.
